How to make favicon.ico

A practical favicon works because the source is simple and the smallest sizes are still readable.

Start with a simplified square source

Use a square PNG, ideally 256px or larger, with a transparent background. Remove tiny text, thin outlines, and excessive negative space before exporting.

If a logo only looks good at large sizes, it is not ready for favicon conversion yet.

The 16px version is the real test

Many favicon files look acceptable at 256px but fail at 16px. Check that the smallest version still has enough contrast and shape recognition.

A multi-size ICO usually includes 16, 32, 48, and 256 pixel entries because different browsers and desktop surfaces choose different sizes.

Publish both ICO and PNG assets

Keep /favicon.ico for broad compatibility and keep the original PNG for app icons, Open Graph assets, and touch icons.

The PNG to ICO tool on byinsu bundles the selected sizes into one favicon file.
